Hard Landscaping Materials

September 1st, 2010

In architecture and landscape design, hard landscaping material is referred to material that is used for construction by an architect or designer to develop his landscape design. The materials that come under hard landscaping materials are bricks, gravel, stones, glass, concrete and the like. Plants come under soft landscaping materials.

There are some very common hard landscaping materials that one must be familiar with as these elements are important in landscape design.

Pavers are commonly used in landscaping. There are a huge variety of pavers that one can choose from to match different areas of your home. Pavers can be used in the driveway, patio, pool area or walkway. Pavers may also be used as stepping stone or even as edgings. Pavers may be made of brick, concrete, stone, grass and any other material. They come in various shapes, colors, sizes and patterns. It is entirely up to your designer or you to choose the kind that will suit your style and landscape theme.

Another widely used hard material that is used for landscaping is rock that has been crushed and this is also available in different colors and sizes. The most common choice is crushed volcanic rock. Its color is red and this gives the landscape a very rustic appeal. Sandstone, gravel, limestone, quartz are the different types of crushed rock that are available. Crushed rock is considered to be very versatile in nature, requires very low maintenance and is not very expensive. Crushed rock is commonly used for driveways, drainage and paths.

Timber is the most commonly used material for constructing steps, decks, walls, edges, gazebos and pergolas. It is not very expensive, easily available and not very difficult to work with. Instead of using new timber try to use timber that has been recycled or reclaimed. Timber can be re-used so make sure you do not waste it.

The most valuable material for hard landscaping is soil. If you intend to improve the quality of soil in your garden or yard, you must add compost or organic fertilizers. Choose plants that will match the soil that is present in the area.

The varieties of hard landscaping materials that are available are so many that choosing the product that will suit your need can be confusing and overwhelming. Select material that will match the site and the plants that are present in the area and the other materials that have been used for landscaping and the entire theme of your garden. For example materials made of any metal or steel will not match any Asian motivated garden. Materials that will reflect a lot of sunlight are not ideal for those areas that get too much of sun. There are certain pavers that only suit light foot traffic and it is not advisable to use these on driveways. Use material that is durable and will withstand any kind of climate and weather in the area you live in.

Choosing the right and the most apt hard landscaping materials is very important to you and your designer. It is like choosing the fixtures for the floor in the house. The hard material used for landscaping must enhance the surroundings.

Tips on How to Aerate Compost

August 31st, 2010

One of the most important components of successful compost production is the presence of sufficient amount of air.

Too little or too much will cause your compost materials to decompose too fast or too slow, thus, virtually defeating the purpose of the whole activity. Or at least, you will need to restack the whole pile.

You also need to learn how to aerate compost for many reasons. For one thing, aerating re-heats the compost heap and keeps it in an aerobic state. This is very important in the decomposition process as air keeps the brown and green materials burning, so to speak. For another thing, turning eliminates and solves many composting problems such as bad odors and large partially decomposed materials.

Turn Regularly

The general rule is that the compost pile must be turned once every 7-10 days although the type of pile will affect said rule. If you have a batch pile, you need to turn every 2-3 days for the first 2 weeks and then just once weekly for the succeeding 4-8 weeks. If you have an add-as-you-go pile, you have to turn it every few time as the scraps are mixed in or when the pile appears matted than it should be. Always remember to seal the top of the compost pile with soil and other brown materials so as to hide the food scraps from unwanted insects and animals.

Use the Correct Tools

The tips on how to aerate compost will not be complete without mention of the appropriate tools. These will keep you safe from insect bites as well as make the work easier and faster. You can either use a garden fork and shovel or purchase a compost aerator tool, either of which will do the work just fine.

You must thoroughly turn the inner part of the compost pile out into the sides of the bin and turn the outer parts of the compost heap into the center. This process will allow the cooler compost materials to provide heat to the center.

Or you can always transfer the pile from one bin to another or from one location to another. This is especially true when the compost pile is ready for use.

Check Moisture

Before turning the compost pile, always check for the moisture level by taking a handful of the compost and squeezing normally. It should have the consistency of a wrung-out sponge – wet but not dripping with water. If it is too wet, you need to spread the materials to dry them or mix in dry brown materials like straw and leaves. It also helps to transfer your pile into a well-drained location. If it is too dry, you have to water layers every 6 to 12 inches during the compost pile’s initial building stages. You should also spray water when turning the compost pile until it attains the desired moisture level.

When you know how to aerate compost, you are assured of an organic fertilizer that will provide for abundant crops, save the environment from chemical fertilizer run-off and lessen your planting costs. All these benefits because you took the time to turn your compost pile!

Good power, not quite as good fit – J. Salzenstein – Boston, MA
The power seems to last even longer than the original battery that came with the vac- perhaps because technology has advanced in a few years, or… who knows? The only downside (so far; I’ve only had it for a couple months) is that it doesn’t fit as tightly, snug, well, or “completely” as the original. So far that hasn’t been a problem, but I worry that down the road – if it shifts in the way it sits – it won’t fit in the charger, hanging on the wall, like it does now.

How to Use a Lawn Core Aeration Machine

August 21st, 2010

One of the best ways to aerate your lawn is to use a core aeration machine. You can rent a lawn aerator for a few hours for between $35 and $75 dollars. Often people can save money renting a core aerator with a neighbor and splitting the cost. Or they can hire someone to do it for between $40 and $100 dollars.

When using a lawn aerator, it is best to do the perimeters first. Then, you should make straight passes back and forth, taking the aeration tines out of the ground and turning the aerator around after each pass until you have completed an area. Then do the same thing in the next area. The average lawn should only take 30-45 minutes. If you have a large lawn, you should plan on an hour.

How do I turn on and operate a lawn aerator?

1) Make sure the switch (if it has one) is turned ON. This is usually located on the engine.

2) Put the choke on.

3) Pull starter cable.

4) Take choke to run.

5) Adjust Aerator throttle lever to the desired speed.

6) Add extra weights if needed or adjust to the desired depth.

Operating the aeration machine.

1) After aerator is turned on move it to the desired starting location on grass.

2) Lower tines into the ground by lowering lever. Usually located just under the handle.

3) Pull the other lever (usually just above the handle) to go forward. (The operation works for Ryan aerators, Bluebirds, and most others. Billy Goat aerators have the tines lever above and the engagement beneath.)

4) Stopping is easy, just let go of the lever

5) To turn, stop and pull the tines out of the ground, engage drive and turn the machine in place. When you have it lined up, lower the tines and do the next strip.

6) Watch out for sprinklers! There is a very slim >1% chance you can break them. Best Luck!
